First Incredible Edible Tokaj Wine Region planting – celebration of spring and new Sensory Herb Garden at Sárospatak Gallery

, , ,

On Saturday 15 April we will celebrate spring and the first First Incredible Edible Tokaj Wine Region planting – when we transform a large empty(ish) bed in front of the Gallery (Sárospataki Képtár) into the new Sensory Herb Garden in the Castle District in Sárospatak.

This is a herb garden for all to discover and share – the first step of a wider project to bring more edible, medicinal and wildlife-friendly plants to the Tokaj Wine Region. Fruit and nut trees and bushes, herbs and vegetables, insect and bird-friendly plants, and mushrooms in public spaces. These all strengthen our link to food and nature, ourselves and our environment, reinforce and develop our communities, and support a strong local economy.handpainted sign with text saying Incredible Edible food to share

To celebrate this first planting and sign-making workshop a number of events draw the community together with the threads of food, nature, art, music, singing, dancing, playing, mending bikes and more. Celebration of spring is the overall theme, as this project springs into creation. Indeed as we sing it into creation! We start at 2 pm singing together. Come and join us!

The event? We’re starting in the morning with “Stone Soup” and Incredible Edible info share at Sárospatak market, to introduce the project and to invite people to join us in the afternoon at Sárospatak Gallery. After the singing opening at 2 pm, clearing and planting the bed commences along with sign-painting for the bed.

I’m delighted that the incredible Buzavirág Foundation community are bringing their superb quality pottery, basketry and rag rugs. The Foundation was set up to provide opportunities for a complete life for people with impaired vision who, without family support, are unable to live independently. We provide a living place, a home, where people with sight difficulties can create a family and do meaningful creative work.

Plus live folk music with Balti and brothers, who will also be assisiting in the Bike-care-repair oiling and tightening session with Tour de Zemplén. Chance to be draw, writ paint with established local artists FeLugossy Laca and friends, and pop-up exhibition of everyone’s work. Local storyteller Anna can take you to a different world too, as can Gabó of Terrapolis. Discover a (really) mini market with juice pressers and cakemakers, winemaker(s) and cheese, craftspeople and artists.

Hopefully living horses too.

A mini mushroom exhibition of local seasonal mushrooms and fungus along with the chance to buy the fariy tale and the great guidebook from the local active mycological society Zempléni Gombász Egyesület. Let’s sing the project into creation together. The event has been growing organically as people discover and suggest what they would like to contribute. What would you like to do / bring / share?

Where would you like to plant in Sárospatak? In the Tokaj Wine Region?

So, where can you imagine creating a space for plants that nurtures people’s senses and contentment, land that nourishes their body, mind and soul? Where can you imagine (planting) a herb or community garden, a local resistant grape pergola shading a bench, some vineyard almond trees or a “Cherry to Medlar” football field for all to enjoy?

Want to know more about the overall Incredible Edible Tokaj Wine Region project? It’s to bring food and nature closer to us all. And us closer to each other. “If you eat, you’re in!” Join us on 15 April to celebrate spring and the planting of edible and wildlife-friendly plants.
