Tolcsva Wine Festival means open cellars -and there are plenty to explore in this picturesque village surrounded by vineyards. Over 100 in fact – so guests can taste all styles of wines in these cool underground havens. Plus the impressive renovated mansions with exhibitions from herbs to local history.
At the outset 16 years ago just 100 gathered for this celebration of wine that now attracts 10 000 people. The village is absolutely packed as festival goers wander between venues that include the park with the main stage, food stands and market. Naturally, with this number of people, accommodation books up quickly!
Higher quality wineries to visit are Tokaj-Oremus, Czemiczki and Grand Tokaj. These tend to have tastings outside thebooklet, so check beforehand. The impressive mansions that house the Wine Museum, Hélia-D Herbal House and Szirmay-Waldbott Visitor Centre also offer interesting events.
