Erdőbénye, snuggled in the basin under the Zemplén mountains, holds its Aszú festival to celebrate Tokaji Aszú, a wine style unique to the Tokaj Wine Region. The principles of the winemaking are fairly similar to those used hundreds of years ago to extract the exciting elemnts – flavours, aromas, sugars – from the dried aszú berries, each one handpicked directly from the vine. Legend has it that the first Aszú wine was created by Laczkó Máté Szepsi who lived in Erdőbénye in the 17th century. This is a gastronomic festival paying homage to the wine speciality.

Tokaji Aszú often called Aszú is a speciality wine of the Tokaj Wine Region. MAde with a process reaching back centuries, the aszú berries are harvested late and have a special method of vinification. Legend had it that it was first made by pastor Laczkó Máté Szepsi, who lived in Erdőbénye in the first half of the 17th century. (New sources show it was being made earlier.)
