Tarcal

Photo of Tarcal from Degenfeld estate

The home of luxury accommodation in the region with four- and five-star hotels. No shortage of guesthouses either, so a good base for exploring the region.

Tarcal also has Terrapolis, one of the region’s only permaculture centre run by creative and imaginate gardener/cook Gabo. Bookings generally needed.

Highlights

Things to do and see

Join one of the increasing number of events here, the largest being Witchy Weekend.

Challenge your senses and your mind in a permaculture-inspired (too) Terrapolis Garden and Table experience. Gabó’s blog, seed-saving and art projects/exhibitions are interesting to follow.

Relax in the luxurious spa, hotel and restaurant Andrássy Rezidencia.

Enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace at the Degenfeld Castle Hotel and Winery set in its park estate and vineyard.

Walk up through the vineyard to the idyllic and iconic Terézia Chapel built in 1749-50.

Or, feeling like a greater challenge? Then hike (or take the car) to the top of Tokaj hill.

Eating and drinking

Tokaj Kikeletculinary workshop with dream terrace of talented winemaker and taste explorer Stéphanie Berecz at the foot of the path leading up past newly-planted fruit trees up to the quarry lake and enormous statue.
