Nestling at the foot of the Sátorhegy at the northwestern tip of the Tokaj wine region triangle, Abaújszántó has a wonderful faded elegance and the first biodynamic winery, Pendits.

Discover the three groups of wine cellars dug into the hillside at the edge of the town.

Visit the thriving local market for fresh cheese, great butter and seasonal vegetables on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Explore the hills, forests and springs of the nearby Aranyosi-völgy (Golden valley) that twists and turns its way to Erdőbénye, you may find opals, or even gold. And keep your eyes open for hoopoes, eastern imperial eagles and golden orioles, some of the 19 protected birds living here.

Love castles? Visit Boldogkőváralja about 10 km north, one of the best in the region. Constantly being renovated, it has a beautifully lit gem/mineral collection as well as one of the largest lead soldier collecctions in Europe.

Events

Ivó nap (“Drinking day” to non-Hungarian speakers) in May has concerts, market and open cellars. A real celebration for the locals.
