Jazz, wine tasting, lamps, wine dinner, mansion garden, nibbles, summer evenings, great company, wine at cellar prices – all this and more at Tállyai BorBár Jazz nights! Elek István Quartet accompanied by great soloists. Monthly from April 2015 :)

25th  July is Cole Porter night – from 7 pm a jazz picnic, grilled dishes and salads from Oroszlános Wine Restaurant, homemade cured sausage (kolbász) and Szirmay spritzer (“fröccs”).

Plus a parade of the three “village wines”: Mád, Olaszliszka and Tállya. In the last couple of years winemakers in these three villages have combined forces to create a wine to represent the village.

Mád

MÁD, by Szent Tamás Vineyards and Winery, which is of course linked to István Szepsy Jr., is a very drinkable dry Furmint which brings the distinctive “Mád-ness” of minerality and great acid structure. As the winery says, the story of this Furmint reaches back 14 million years, to the volcanic activity to create this terroir rich in zeolite, bentonite and kaolin which gives the unmistakable mineral character of Mád wines. Harvested from several Mád vineyards in September, this dry white, aged only in stainless steel with their own yeast, is fresh with crisp acids and citrus flavours with volcanic minerals returning in the finish. Design is by leading Hungarian designer for the wine world, Géza Ipacs, who was commissioned to create the expanded Tokaj Aszú bottle (with elegant glass stopper) which has been adopted by other producers in the region. OLASZLISZKA

Olaszliszka Friends of Wine (Amici Vinorum Olaszliszka / Olaszliszkai Borbarátok), including well-respected Tokaj winemaker Samuel Tinon. All ten winemakers in the association are all linked to this village in the centre of the region: they live there, have vines or come from the village. The 2014 OLASZLISZKA wine, a dry Hárlevelű, was harvested in October 2014, aged in oak and bottled in March 2015. 1000 bottles (750 litres from 1390 kg grapes). Pear and walnut, a rounded spicy wine.

TÁLLYA

The four producers of Tállya wines, not all permanent residents of Tállya, were drawn together by their love of culture, arts and traditions along with good food and wines: Ferenc Szűcs, Péter Barta, László Zsadányi and  Krisztina Márton-Kováts.

The wines come from 20 vineyards, an area of around 30 hectares. As you might expect minerality is strong in these artisan wines from traditionally cultivated vineyards. Grapes for Tállya wine grew in Somszög-, Görbe-, Bohomály-, Bártfai-, Tökös-mály-, Dongó- és Hasznos- vineyards. One of the prime aims is to return lands neglected for decades (often 80-90 years) to their prime. They are specifically looking for old, abandoned vineyards which often require 3-4 years cultivation before they produce again.

Tállya Wines is also open to other producers who cultivate their land and create wines of a similar quality. This openness is represented by their logo, a fractal, which branches and increases without losing its original form. A limited quantity of the wines is produced with the typical Tállya acid backbone. The ripe grapes are aged for a minimum of 6 months in the barrel, giving wines with not overly high alcohol complemented by fruitiness and lively acidity.

The dry Furmint, called Tállya, following the now well-known example of Mád, an example and role model for the Tállya vintners. The wines are made by István Hudák who has also accepted responsibility for checking the vines (strict yield control). The light golden Furmint offers aromas of flowers and ripe, juicy fruits, ambraced by mineral notes. Dry with vibrant acidity, full body and tautness, powerful fruit. This wine exudes strength and energy. Hungarian three-time champion sommelier, Antal Kovács, recommends it with salads, poultry and fish dishes sommelier is.
