The relics of Saint Urban, patron saint of vine growers and winemakers, have lain in Our Lady of the Visitation church in Monok since 1771 when they were gifted by Pope Clement XIVth to Count István Andrássy to ensure a plentiful harvest of grapes for the wine so treasured by the pope.

The Tokaj Women and Wine Association (Tokaji Borbarátnők) has been instrumental in reviving a long-held tradition of celebrating the saint’s day. Every Whit weekend the relics are celebrated at mass and events, on a ceremonial procession through the Tokaj wine region and, as part of the celebrations, numerous wine cellars are open and smaller events are organised.
