In celebration of St John’s Eve (Szent Iván éjszakája) and close to the summer solstice, the museums of Hungary open their doors after hours for the Night of the Museums. And in Tokaj it’s – perhaps understandably;) – all about wine!
Events in the museum
4 pm – Mikós Makoldi preesents the history of the Russian Tokaji Wine Committee in relation to Tokaj
4.30 pm – Opening of the Russian Tokaji Wine Committee exhibition
5 pm – “From the roof to the cellar” guided tour of the museum with, naturally, a glass of Tokaji wine
Events in the gorgeous museum garden
4 to 8 pm – make figures from sweetcorn
6 pm – Kuruc fencing and costume demonstration
7 pm – Tokaj Museum, Tokaji wine – wines from the Tokaji Boraszok Asztaltársasága with cheeses from the Kapúvári family
8 pm – concert – Igriczek band with medieval to 17th-century music and instruments
10 pm to 2 am – bonfire and fire jumping – music, dance and fun
On the 20th June, admission to the museum is half price until 4 pm and then free for the evening events. Charge for the wine and cheese tasting.
The Tokaji Museum has an ecclesiastical collection, an exhibition that gives insight into fishing practices on the river Tisza, and, this is Tokaj after all, vineyard and winemaking equipment and old wine labels, in the roof space. All this in a truly stunning building that dates from around 1790 and is just down the street from the main square.
