The picturesque village of Erdőbénye has been known for centuries as a place where coopers really know their stuff. Traditions have been handed down for generations: oak from the Zemplén hills was brought here to be cured before the master coopers set about creating barrels that are today sent all over the world – as well as being used locally of course. And there are all sizes, from the individual / small family business right up to international companies.
This is a real village festival, set around the sports field, and primarily for the villagers. but you may well see something here you won’t elsewhere: Erdőbénye’s coopers still perform the traditional “stave dance” of days gone by. And it is quite a sight I can tell you!!!
If you’re looking for the better wine, you’re sure to find some when you visit the top producers here of which there are quite a few or try Gigerli bar for a wide selection of among the best in the region.
